Quick question: why do we have only one option to buy a sustainable sponge in leading UK supermarkets? (in my experience)

There’s an abundance of different sponges but only one from Spontex that uses recycled plastic for part of its sponge and the other part being biodegradable.

Similarly, why is it so hard to find biodegradable baby wipes? 😔

I digress, although perhaps this thought warrants further investigation and a longer post.

It beggars believe that walking into any major supermarket means staring at a huge choice of cleaning products and if you are lucky you have one that’s somewhat sustainable.

Unless we, the consumers, vote with our feet and make our preferences known to Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Aldi, Morrisons, Lidl, etc, the people responsible for procurement will not change their assortment.

So, the take away from my post is to speak to a manager in store or write them a message asking for specific products to be stocked or failing that, request more sustainable options on the shelves.

Below are some links to get you started and don’t let their stock answers about ‘we are sooo sustainable; bla bla, we love the planet…’ put you off. The more of us contact them, the more they’ll start putting more sustainable products on the shelves.

Otherwise, I encourage you to seek out local shops that specialise in stocking sustainable products and champion plastic / packaging free shopping 😉
