Synopsis: Manufacturing in the UK unfairly gets bad press. Despite reports of its imminent demise, Britain remains the world’s 6th largest manufacturer. Output reached an all time high in 2007, although right now the sector is suffering from the downturn. To take the temperature of industry in the UK we went to the midland town of Derby, which hosts a surprising range of companies producing goods for both domestic and export markets.

Hovis Go on Lad TV Commercial

This is the excellent, if not moving, TV ad for Hovis bread currently airing in the UK. It shows a young lad running through history after picking up a load of fresh Hovis bread from the baker. Call it a “historical commercial” why don’t you (not).

“Things we do for free beer”
Holgee (Holger Oppermann) at the local pub/club in Hannover some time in late 2006. It was a fun night (if my soaked memory serves me right – but then I did get pretty much slaughtered! I will spare you the details…). What more can you want from life than listening to your favorite tracks at eardrum bursting volume, drink gallons of free beer… with your best mates?

Ice Hockey in Hannover Teaser ECH Indians v EV Ravensburg

Even if the game last Sunday (25/3/07) didn’t go too well, I am very happy for being allowed to film just a foot away from the ice – lodged between the two teams. The game started badly for the Hannover Indians, who were two goals behind in the first third but by the end of normal playing time they equalised three all (3:3). After extra time their luck caught up with them and they lost 3:4 after a goal during the penalties shoot-out.

Indians v Ravensburg Eishockey in Hannover Teaser

Auch wenn das Spiel am letzten Sonntag nicht gut fÃ¼r die Hannover Indians war, so hat es doch viel Spass gemacht direkt an der Bande am Eis stehen und Aufnehmen zu dÃ¼rfen. Die Indians haben wacker gekÃ¤mpft und den 0:2 RÃ¼ckstand wieder gut gemacht mit 3:3 im letzten Drittel. Nach der VerlÃ¤ngerung war es dann doch vorbei und die Ravensburger besiegelten ihren Gewinn mit einem Tor in den Penalties.

Laptop als Vorschau Video Monitor

Falls ihr nach einem einfachen Weg sucht euere Video Aufnahmen zu kontrollieren und der eingebaute Sucher / LCD zu klein ist, dann gibt’s nichts besseres als iRecord fÃ¼r den Mac Die Software ist kostenlos und wiegt nur 288kb (gezipped). Um Vorschaubilder live von dem DV Camcorder zu holen gibt’s nichts was einfacher wÃ¤re: Camcorder Ã¼ber Firewire (oder USB) an den Mac anschliessen, iRecord starten und sicherstellen das was man sieht auch OK ist.

NatÃ¼rlich kann man die Bilder auch als Quicktime Movie aufnehmen. Es ersetzt selbstverstÃ¤ndlich keinen professionellen Videovorschaumonitor, ist aber besser (und billiger) um einfach mal zu sehen ob das ganze OK aussieht was man da aufnehmen will. Kontrast, AuflÃ¶sung und Farben sind natÃ¼rlich nicht kontrollierbar damit aber besser als die eingebaute mini-LCD oder b/w Sucher allemal! Hier ein kleines Testvideo was ich vor einer Minute in meinem unterbelichteten Zimmer aufgenommen habe:

Preview Firewire Video with iRecord

If you have a DV Camcorder (firewire or USB) and are looking for a simple, quick tool that allows you to preview and capture your camera’s live image on an Apple Mac, then look no further than iRecord from mindsprockets.com It’s free (as in beer) and has nothing more than a friendly red record button and a nice large window. No preferences, no other buttons, no fuss – just the image, live and straight from your camcorder.

This way I can use my Apple Mac PowerBook as a preview monitor and even capture quick clips. OK, so it doesn’t have the best resolution or give you any control over image colour, sharpness, etc. but it works just dandy to check that you can actually use the image you are about to record. Beats a small LCD panel or b/w finder any time! Here’s the test footage, recorded about a minute ago in my darkened room:
